Growth of Atlantic Bluefin Tuna: Direct Age Estimates
نویسندگان
چکیده
New models were fit for recent samples of Atlantic bluefin tuna on the basis of annulus interpretations in otoliths. Samples were specified further based upon whether individuals originated in western or eastern nursery systems using otolith stable isotope analysis. A model fit to recent year-classes (after 1970) for western captured, western-origin Atlantic bluefin tuna yielded von Bertalanffy coefficients of K=0.20; L∞=257; and t0=0.83. These coefficients are substantially different than those from the Turner and Restrepo model (K=0.08; L∞=382; t0= -0.71), and predicts lengths at age which are similar to about age 12, but increasingly divergent at greater ages. Growth models were also fit for the eastern population, but coefficients were probably biased due to the small sample size. Given the established accuracy of direct age estimates from otoliths and the feasibility of complementary age and natal assignment determinations using the same prepared otoliths, we recommend future assessments be based upon direct ageing of otoliths over other approaches.

Atlantic bluefin tuna: population dynamics, ecology, fisheries and management
Both old and new information on the biology and ecology of Atlantic bluefin tuna have confronted scientists with research challenges: research needs to be connected to current stockassessment and management issues. We review recent studies on habitat, migrations and population structure, stressing the importance of electronic tagging results in the modification of our perception of bluefin tuna...
متن کاملAtlantic bluefin tuna spawn at suboptimal temperatures for their offspring.
Life-history traits such as spawning migrations and timing of reproduction are adaptations to specific environmental constraints and seasonal cycles in many organisms' annual routines. In this study we analyse how offspring fitness constrains spawning phenology in a large migratory apex predator, the Atlantic bluefin tuna. The reproductive schedule of Atlantic bluefin tuna varies between spawni...
متن کاملOrigin of Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) in the Bay of Biscay
Weused carbon and oxygen isotope ratios (dC and dO) in otoliths as a tool for identifying the nursery origin of Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) caught in the eastern North Atlantic Ocean (Bay of Biscay). Juvenile and adult bluefin tuna were collected over three consecutive years (2009—2011) using the regional bait boat fleet. Otolith dC and dO values of bluefin tuna were measured by mas...
متن کاملChanges in the Distribution of Atlantic Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus) in the Gulf of Maine 1979-2005
The Gulf of Maine, NW Atlantic Ocean, is a productive, seasonal foraging ground for Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus), but commercial landings of adult size classes were up to 40% below the allocated total allowable catch between 2004 to 2008 for the rod and reel, harpoon, and purse seine categories in the Gulf of Maine. Reduction in Atlantic bluefin tuna catches in the Gulf of Maine coul...
متن کاملDispersal Routes and Habitat Utilization of Juvenile Atlantic Bluefin Tuna, Thunnus thynnus, Tracked with Mini PSAT and Archival Tags
Between 2005 and 2009, we deployed 58 miniature pop-up satellite archival tags (PSAT) and 132 implanted archival tags on juvenile Atlantic bluefin tuna (age 2-5) in the northwest Atlantic Ocean. Data returned from these efforts (n = 26 PSATs, 1 archival tag) revealed their dispersal routes, horizontal and vertical movements and habitat utilization. All of the tagged bluefin tuna remained in the...
